Description
Greek Stuffed Onions are a traditional Mediterranean dish featuring tender baked onions filled with a flavorful mixture of rice, ground meat, herbs, and spices, creating a comforting and aromatic meal.
Ingredients
- 6 large onions
- 300 g ground beef or lamb
- 1/2 cup uncooked rice
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 cup vegetable or beef broth
- Juice of 1 lemon
Instructions
- Peel onions and cut a slit down one side. Boil in water for 10 minutes until softened, then carefully separate layers.
- In a pan, heat olive oil and sauté chopped onion until soft. Add garlic and cook briefly.
- Add ground meat and cook until browned.
- Stir in rice, parsley, dill, oregano, cinnamon, salt, pepper, and tomato paste. Cook for 2–3 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let mixture cool slightly.
- Place a spoonful of filling into each onion layer and roll into a bundle.
- Arrange stuffed onions in a baking dish snugly.
- Pour broth and lemon juice over the onions.
- Cover and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 45–50 minutes until tender and cooked through.
Notes
- Handle onion layers gently to avoid tearing.
- You can make a vegetarian version by omitting meat and adding more rice or vegetables.
- Serve with yogurt or tzatziki for extra flavor.
- Dish tastes even better the next day.
