Description

Creamy French Onion Beef Rice Skillet is a rich and comforting one-pan meal featuring seasoned ground beef, caramelized onions, creamy rice, and melted cheese inspired by classic French onion soup flavors.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 cup uncooked long grain rice
  • 2 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella or Gruyère cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and cook slowly for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized.
  3. Add garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  5. Season with salt, black pepper, and thyme.
  6. Stir in uncooked rice and cook for 1 minute.
  7. Pour in beef broth, heavy cream, and Worcestershire sauce.
  8. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cover.
  9. Cook for 18-20 minutes until rice is tender.
  10. Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top.
  11. Cover for 2-3 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  12. Garnish with parsley and serve warm.

Notes

  • Caramelizing the onions slowly develops the best flavor.
  • Gruyère cheese provides a more authentic French onion taste.
  • Add mushrooms for extra depth and texture.
  • Use low-sodium broth to control saltiness.
  • Store leftovers refrigerated for up to 4 days.
