Description

Stuffed Cabbage Rolls are a classic comfort dish made with tender cabbage leaves wrapped around a savory filling of ground meat, rice, and spices, then slowly simmered in a rich tomato sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 large head green cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup uncooked white rice
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and carefully remove the core from the cabbage.
  2. Place the cabbage in boiling water and cook until leaves soften. Remove leaves gently and set aside.
  3. In a bowl, combine ground beef, rice, onion, garlic, paprika, salt, pepper, and egg. Mix well.
  4. Place a portion of filling onto each cabbage leaf, fold in sides, and roll tightly.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  6. Mix tomato sauce, tomato paste, and beef broth together.
  7. Place cabbage rolls seam-side down in the pot and pour sauce mixture over them.
  8. Cover and simmer on low heat for 60–75 minutes until cabbage is tender and filling is cooked.
  9. Serve hot with sauce spooned over the rolls.

Notes

  • If cabbage leaves are thick, trim the rib slightly for easier rolling.
  • Leftovers taste even better the next day.
  • You can substitute ground lamb or turkey for variation.
