Description
Classic Calzone is a folded Italian pizza filled with savory meats, rich cheeses, and marinara sauce, baked until golden and crispy on the outside with a warm, melty center.
Ingredients
- 1 lb pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup cooked ground beef or chicken sausage (halal)
- 1/2 cup marinara sauce (plus extra for serving)
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Divide pizza dough into 2 equal portions and roll each into an 8-inch circle.
- In a bowl, mix ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and black pepper.
- Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on half of each dough circle.
- Spoon cheese mixture over the sauce, then add cooked meat.
- Fold dough over filling to form a half-moon shape and seal edges by crimping with a fork.
- Brush tops with beaten egg and lightly drizzle with olive oil.
- Cut small slits on top to allow steam to escape.
- Bake for 15–18 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool slightly and serve with warm marinara sauce.
Notes
- Do not overfill to prevent leaking.
- Vegetables like mushrooms or peppers can be added.
