Ingredients
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and finely chopped
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, cornstarch, and butter. Cook for 5–7 minutes until softened and thickened. Let cool.
- Roll out puff pastry slightly on a floured surface and transfer to the prepared baking sheet.
- Spoon apple filling down the center of the pastry, leaving space on the sides.
- Cut slits along both sides of the pastry and fold strips over the filling in a crisscross pattern.
- Brush with beaten egg.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown and puffed. Cool completely.
- In a small bowl, whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle glaze over cooled kringle before serving.
Notes
- Granny Smith apples provide a nice tart contrast.
- Allow filling to cool before assembling to prevent soggy pastry.
- Store covered at room temperature for up to 2 days.
- Can be reheated briefly in the oven to crisp pastry.
